Chapter Nine
It wasn’t even dinnertime yet but Abel’s was packed when Mina walked in. Standing on her tiptoes, she swiveled first left, then right, searching for Tyler through the gaps between the people around her. No luck. She sank back onto her heels and tried the old-fashioned approach of wiggling her way up to the bar.
Just thinking about seeing him set her heart to racing but for a much different reason than it used to when they first met. Much to her delight, Tyler had been right that first morning. They didn’t make it out of bed the rest of the day. Or a good portion of the following day either. In fact, over the last three weeks about eighty-five percent of the time they hung out they ended up back between the sheets.
Mina shivered at the memories, at the things he taught her. She loved every single dirty, sweaty minute of it.
But their work schedules hadn’t coincided so she hadn’t seen him for a few days. She hadn’t even been able to make it to the fight last night. Talking to him on the phone when they could steal a few minutes every day just didn’t cut it. She needed to see him, couldn’t wait to touch him.
When he invited her to meet him at the bar before taking her out to dinner, she didn’t think the place would be so crowded. A drink before dinner on a Wednesday night must be a favorite pastime of the townies. But the excitement bubbling up inside her in anticipation of seeing him superseded her aversion to crowds.
She made it about halfway to the bar when a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, effectively stopping her.
“Looking for someone, baby?” Tyler’s low voice in her ear sent goose bumps along her skin.
Turning her head she grazed his lips with hers. “I think he just found me.”
A growl rumbled out of him before he deepened the kiss. Mindful of the bar full of people around them, she gently pulled away to turn in his arms and got a good glimpse of his face. She winced before she could stop herself.
A black bruise covered his slightly swollen right eye and the opposite cheek had a nasty cut, an interesting shade of purple, running along his cheekbone.
Seeing her reaction, he chuckled. “Pretty, aren’t I?”
“Up until this point I would have said hell yes every time—but what happened to you? I miss one fight and you let yourself get mangled?”
He shrugged, taking her hand and leading her to the bar. “My opponent last night was a little more…challenging than the ones I’ve been fighting lately. Guy got in a few solid hits before I knocked him on his ass.”
She perched up on a high barstool and pulled him between her legs so she could gently inspect his bruises with her fingers. “Why do you do this to yourself? Does it hurt?”
Flashing her that impish smile, he nipped her fingers with his teeth. “You know I only let him hit me just so you could fuss over me right now.
